Too Big to Bite
Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 02:19AM Press Conference and Protest at Apple Retail Store in San Francisco -
June 10th at High Noon
Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc. Accused of Destablizing the American Economy: Is Apple Too Big to Comply with American Laws and Practices?
On June 10th, the Black Economic Council will lead a community protest at the Apple Computer Retail Store located at One Stockton Street in San Francisco, CA 94108 at 12 PM.
Apple is the largest technology firm in the United States in terms of market capital and profits. Its pretax profits in 2010 exceeded $25 billion and it is reported to have a cash hoard of $65.7 billion that will be used to gobble up competitors in the near future.
This protest is based on consumer concerns that Apple may now be "Too Big to Regulate" and what is good for Apple may not be good for America.
The protest will address:
- Growing invasions of privacy, even of children;
- Violations of Apple's own transparency commitments;
- Failing to comply with government policies urging jobs for skilled Americans rather than poorly paid foreigners under the H-1B visa program;
- Refusing to hire Blacks, Latinos and Asian Americans;
- Refusing to do business with small minority and women-owned businesses; and
- Having a secret plan to gobble up competitors while misleading the Department of Justice and the FCC.
- Exploitation of foreign workers who work 80 to 100 hours of overtime, are forced to sign 'No-Suicide' Pacts and to stand 14 hours a day
Based on research done by the Black Economic Council, Apple employs less than 2% Blacks, less than 4% Latinos and virtually no Southeast Asian Americans.
Similarly, Apple awards less than one percent of outside contracts to small Black owned businesses, less than 2% to Latino owned businesses, and less than one percent to women of color and small Southeast Asian owned businesses.
Len Canty, Chair of the Black Economic Council stated: "The practices of Apple are counter to those of President Obama who is encouraging job creation in America. The actions of Apple violate antitrust provisions and Apple may now be 'too big to break up or regulate' as it gobbles up competitors with its $65 billion cash hoard."
"This is the first of what is likely to be many protest throughout the country questioning Apple being 'too big to regulate or control'," added Mr. Canty.
Faith Bautista, the President of the National Asian American Coalition (NAAC), stated: "Has Apple become too big to bite? 110 million minorities denied job opportunities don't think so."
The Apple Store is located two blocks south of Union Square at One Stockton Street, San Francisco, CA 94108. Located at the intersection of Ellis and Stockton, and Fourth and Market Streets in downtown San Francisco.
