FACEBOOK'S STAINED RECORD MOVES TO MENLO PARK

AUGUST 24, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(En Español)

Press Conference and Rally at Facebook's Menlo Park Campus  - August 27th at 2:00 PM

Join the Black Economic Council and several other Black, Latino, Asian American and women groups who have been excluded from Facebook's non-diverse workforce and small business entrepreneurial opportunities. A press conference and rally will be occurring at Facebook's new Menlo Park campus on August 27th from 2:00-3:00pm.

This rally addresses Facebook's lack of transparency and serious business and employment discrimination issues.

In contrast to other Silicon Valley companies, Facebook has refused to provide their employment data and business practices that affect minorities and women. The only data the Black Economic Council, the Latino Business Chamber of Greater LA and the National Asian American Coalition has been able to obtain indicates that less than two percent of Facebook's employees are Black, less than four percent are Latino and only a quarter of their workforce are women. In contrast, neighboring Stanford University has a student body at the undergraduate level that is well over 50% women, 17% Latino and 11% Black.

Similarly, less than 1% of Facebook's corporate and federal contracts are awarded to Black, Latino or Asian American owned businesses. Both of these matters are now before the US Department of Labor and Department of Justice.

Yolanda Lewis, Chief Deputy of the Black Economic Council and a former Silicon Valley professional stated "Facebook, under Mark Zuckerberg, has ignored the needs of the majority of Silicon Valley's population and small businesses. Until Facebook wakes up to the realities of doing business in California, we will be frequently appearing before the Menlo Park City Council, before the Department of Justice, the White House and at Facebook's new quasi-public campus in Menlo Park to inform the public."

Facebook's Menlo Park Campus is located at Bayfront Expressway (84) and Network Circle.

JOIN us on August 27th from 2:00-3:00pm to show your support for our children's privacy, diversity in employment and contract opportunities. #Economics, #Justice, #SiliconValley

"If there is no struggle, there is no progress.  Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing the ground.  They want rain without thunder and lightning.  They want the ocean without the awful roar of its waters.  Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will."---------------- Fredrick Douglass
